Essential Oil Dilution for Babies & Children
A child's skin is thinner and more permeable than an adult's, so essential oils should be diluted far more — and some oils are best avoided entirely at young ages.
Use the guidance below as a starting point, always patch test, and check with your pediatrician or a qualified aromatherapist before using oils on or around a child.

These are conservative ceilings, not targets — start lower. Essential oils are generally not recommended for babies under 3 months.
| Age | Body | Face | Bath |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infant (3–24 months) | ~0.5% | Not recommended | Not recommended |
| Child (2–6 years) | ~1–2% | Not recommended | ~1% |
| Older children (6+) | Toward adult levels, gradually | Low (≤1%) | ~1–2% |
Oils to avoid for young children
- Peppermint and eucalyptus (and other strong menthol / 1,8-cineole oils) — avoid for young children, especially near the face.
- "Hot" oils such as cinnamon, clove, oregano, and thyme.
- Favour gentle oils like lavender, Roman chamomile, and mandarin — heavily diluted.
How to use safely around children
- Diffuse intermittently in a well-ventilated room, never in a closed space.
- Never apply undiluted oils; keep them away from the face, hands, and eyes.
- Store all bottles out of reach.
